Flights to Tanzania
The idyllic Tanzanian archipelago of Zanzibar has long been a sought after destination. For centuries it has been a key trading hub, and its rich history has left it awash with African, Arabic and Portuguese influences.
While Zanzibar’s beaches offer the tranquillity of island life, its crowning jewel is Stone Town in Zanzibar City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famed for its diverse architecture.
Navigate a snaking maze of alleyways to find regal Arab mansions alongside traditional Swahili homes and teeming marketplaces. Here you’ll discover why Zanzibar is dubbed Spice Island as the smell of locally grown cloves, nutmeg, pepper and cinnamon fills the humid air.
For animal and nature lovers, the Jozani Forest Reserve is an unmissable excursion. Tip-toe through thick mangroves on a wooden boardwalk and listen for the calls of the Zanzibar red colobus, an extremely rare species of monkey found only in Zanzibar.
Uzi Island in the south offers more lush forests and exotic creatures. Paddle to the conservation area on a traditional wooden canoe and experience local traditions as you mix with the residents of Uzi Village.
Prison Island is another fascinating day trip from Stone Town. Perched in the Zanzibar Channel, Prison Island hosts a 19th century prison building – though it has never actually housed prisoners. The main attraction on the island is in fact its colony of giant tortoises which were imported from the Seychelles over 100 years ago.
To unwind after a busy day exploring, you can relax on the white sands of Zanzibar’s stunning palm-lined beaches. Bwejuu is one of island’s most peaceful while Kendwa is regularly treated to glorious sunsets. For a livelier atmosphere, head to Nungwi and one of its vibrant beachfront parties. Fire dancers perform relentlessly, and music plays long into the early hours – all to the backdrop of crashing waves and a twinkling night sky.
Much like its architecture, Zanzibar’s food scene is as sensational as it is varied. From local delicacies like octopus soup to Indian-inspired curries, you’ll never be far from a new taste or spice. The waterfront Forodhani night market is the perfect place to sample these dishes, transforming a Stone Town park into a hubbub of street vendors. Arrive before dusk to watch local chefs spark up their grills and create a festival atmosphere as hundreds come flocking to feast on the delicious street food.
