How to book

You can book your Renfe train tickets on emirates.com, an online travel agency or any travel agent.

When you book your journey, simply select the respective city as departure or destination as you would if you were booking a normal flight. You’ll find a combination of trains and flights that match your search criteria. Renfe trains will either have an EK flight number between 3090 and 3149 or 9B flight number between 4000 and 4999.

You will receive details on which destinations are covered along with your Renfe ticket.

General check-in process

You’ll need to present your ticket to board the train. If you’re booking through an Emirates office or a travel agent, ask them to add the train service before they complete your booking.

Your Renfe ticket will include information on connections between airports and train stations. If you encounter any issues while checking in online, please contact Renfe staff for further assistance.

Transportation between stations and airports

Renfe does not operate direct services between Madrid and Barcelona airports and the regional points in Spain. Therefore, passengers must transfer trains at the train stations in downtown.

Connecting in Madrid

If you are travelling from/to Madrid airport your ticket(s) include free airport transfer when travelling on AVE and other long-distance trains. You are entitled to a free train ticket from/to Madrid airport to/from Madrid Atocha (XOC) or Madrid Chamartin (XTI) using train line C1 departing from Madrid Airport Terminal 4. Madrid airport and train stations Atocha (XOC) and Chamartín (XTI) are located in the city center.

From the airport by train take Line C1 of Renfe Cercanías, it runs from Terminal T4 of Madrid-Barajas airport to the City Center. Key locations include Chamartín, Nuevos Ministerios, Atocha and Principe Pío.

The Airport T4 station has wider turnstiles than usual to allow for luggage, and ticket machines selling all Renfe products.

Estimated travel time: 11 minutes to or from Chamartín.

If you are traveling by subway take metro line 8 which runs from all the airport terminals to Nuevos Ministerios station in central Madrid.

Estimated travel time: 12-15 minutes to Nuevos Ministerios.

Connecting in Barcelona

If you are travelling from/to Barcelona airport your ticket(s) include free airport transfer when travelling on AVE and other long-distance trains. In Barcelona you are entitled to a free train ticket from/to Barcelona airport to/from Barcelona train station Sants (YJB) using the R2 North Line. Barcelona airport and downtown train stations:

Departures from the airport are between 05:42 and 23:38.

From the airport by train take line R2 Norte Aeropuerto - Sant Celoni / Maçanet Massanes.

The entrance to the train station is in T2B. It can be reached via the same set of escalators that also lead to departures. Follow the signs for RENFE, along a covered bridge across the main road outside the airport. The train station is at the bottom of the stairs on the other side.

If you are arriving or departing from T1 you will not be able to walk to or from the train station. It is necessary to catch one of the free shuttle buses(Opens an external website in a new tab) that run between the train station and T1.

  • Airport Train from Estacio Sants (Barcelona Sants) In the City Centre:
    Estacio Sants(Opens an external website in a new tab) is a large train station located at the top of Avenida Roma. It has many platforms and ticket booths. Therefore, it is worth arriving in plenty of time to ensure that you have enough time to find your platform.
  • Frequency: every 30 minutes. Approximate journey time of 22 minutes.

How to obtain your free ticket

Go to one of the Renfe train ticket vending machines. They can be found in both the airport station and the main rail stations. If you are unsure on how to use the vending machine, please look for an official staff member wearing a high-visibility jacket. There is normally somebody manning the machines who can help.

You will need to enter in the 5-digit pass code called “CombinadoCercanias” which is located in the left upper corner of your PDF ticket. You may also be able to scan the barcode to retrieve your ticket.
