Channel Dubai’s history in one of the city’s oldest and most charming areas, perfect for photographs, explore ancient sights, art galleries and cafes

If you’re looking for old-world Middle Eastern charm in Dubai, the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood is the place to visit. Wander narrow lanes and twisting alleyways that meander alongside beautifully restored traditional houses built with stone, gypsum, teak, sandalwood and palm wood, and many topped with traditional wind towers – or “al barajeel” – that provide natural air conditioning.

As you explore, seek out the Wall of Dubai, a section of ancient border wall from 1800AD. The 50cm-thick, 600-metre long, 2.5-metre high wall was built with gypsum and coral stone, and partly demolished at the start of the 20th century to accommodate expansion. Today, about four metres of the preserved wall remain. For in-depth insights into the area, join a guided tour with the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding. History buffs will enjoy a collection of thoughtful museums that tell the story of Dubai’s rich past, with the emirate’s evolving culture reflected in exhibits, craft shops, and art galleries. Gorgeous courtyard cafés dot the nostalgic space if you fancy an Arabic coffee or a snack.

If you’d like to stay for longer than just a few hours, check out many hotels in the heart of Al Fahidi. Al Seef, a buzzing waterfront development nearby, also offers stylish and pocket-friendly accommodation. In the winter months, the Al Fahidi district hosts several seasonal cultural and artistic events.

Adjacent to this historic area is Dubai’s Al Fahidi Fort, the oldest building in the city and now home to Dubai Museum, and Saeed al Maktoum House, the former official residence of Sheikh Saeed bin Maktoum al Maktoum, the Ruler of Dubai between 1912 and 1958 and grandfather of the current Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
