Spot flamingoes, raptors, eagles and more

Free activity

Address: Ras al Khor

The first time you see this incredible, hidden sanctuary in Dubai, it’s a genuine surprise. Situated in the heart of the city and framed by some of its busiest roads, the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary’s 6.2-square-kilometre landscape is made up of salt flats, mangroves, mudflats and lagoons, all connected to Dubai Creek. The sanctuary was the first wetland in the UAE to be recognised by the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, a global treaty for the conservation of wetlands, in 2007.

A vital stopover for migratory waterbirds on the east-African-west-Asian flyway, Ras Al Khor is most famous for its pink flamingoes, but there are over 450 other animal species and 47 plant species in the area, too. Head to one of the sanctuary’s free-to-enter hides, accessed via walkways on the park’s perimeter, and you can catch sight of broad-billed sandpipers, great spotted eagles (usually in the winter), raptors, and Pacific golden plovers, among many other creatures.

If you’re driving to the sanctuary, Google Maps is the best way to get there. Search for Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary. If you’re using public transport, take the metro to the Creek Metro Station, then a water bus or taxi from the station to the sanctuary. The water bus is a great choice as it offers fantastic photo opportunities.
